Probiotics: Frequently Asked Questions

Probiotics: Frequently Asked Questions

What are Probiotics?

You have a variety of good and bad bacteria living in your intestinal tract, aka your “gut.” A probiotic supplement is made up of the good bacteria and are living organisms that help improve gut health and the gut’s immune function.

They can be found in supplements and from foods like greek yogurt, sauerkraut, kefir, and kimchi to name a few.

What are the benefits of probiotics?

Do I need one after bariatric surgery?

After bariatric surgery you will likely be taking an antibiotic to help reduce your risk for infection. Antibiotics cannot tell the difference between “good” bacteria and “bad” bacteria in the body.

This is where probiotics come in. By replacing the bacteria in your body with “good” bacteria from a probiotic, you are helping prevent the “bad” bacteria from taking over and causing diarrhea and other gut discomfort.

How do I read probiotic labels?

You will see two key parts of a probiotic label. There will be mention of units and strains. A unit is the amount of probiotics in the capsule. This determines how well the probiotic will work.

Strains will refer to the different types of probiotics in the capsule. It is helpful to have a variety of types of probiotics present in your supplement to have a wide range of health benefits.

How do I choose a probiotic?

Select one from a reputable manufacturer that is certified for potency, which will be stated on the supplement’s packaging. Typically, a probiotic that is refrigerated is a sign of very good quality. Make sure the following criteria is met when selecting your supplement.

When will I start to see or feel the benefits?

Some people can start to feel the benefits of taking probiotics within a few days, weeks or months of consistently taking the supplement.

Everyone is different and some may have a healthier gut than others. So results will be slightly different. The key is to be consistent, and take them daily.
